•• John Wimble...

The 1950s were an exciting time for me, not least because I discovered football, music, roller-skating and girls, but not necessarily in that order! I was living in Rolfe Lane, New Romney and looking back, the Fifties seemed to go by in a flash – I left school and started work.

In 1952, some friends and I were offered a small building in Littlestone and we formed a Youth Club, meeting once a week. I had a wind-up gramophone and a small collection of ‘78’ records and so I suppose I was the “DJ” for the evenings. The very first ‘78’ that I bought was “I Believe” and “Your Cheating Heart” by Frankie Laine.

You can listen to some of my favourite music from the 1950s on my show on Romney Marsh FM at 9 p.m. on Saturdays nights.
